Loyalty tiers: rewarding the customers who carry the turnover

In almost every shop a small group of customers accounts for a large share of the turnover. Loyalty tiers are the way to give exactly that group more without giving everyone else more. Whoever collects more, collects faster.

How a tier works

The tier changes the earn rate, not the price

Every tier carries a multiplier. It acts on the points an order earns - not on the price of the goods. A customer on Gold pays the same as everyone else and receives more points for the same order.

That is the decisive difference to a tiered discount: turnover is untouched, and the benefit only materialises later and only if the customer returns and redeems.

Four tiers that stand right after the installation

The plugin ships a ready-made ladder. Every tier requires two things at once: a point balance and a number of completed orders. Nobody climbs on a single large order alone.

TierFrom pointsMinimum ordersMultiplier
Silver00× 1.0
Gold5003× 1.2
Platinum2,0006× 1.5
Titanium5,00012× 2.0

Names, thresholds, multipliers, colours and the minimum number of orders are all editable, and you can add tiers. Silver is the entry tier: it demands nothing and changes nothing - it makes sure every member has a tier.

What the multiplier is worth, in numbers

A customer orders for 200 euros. With the default earn rate of one point per euro that gives:

TierPoints for 200 €ValueMore than Silver
Silver2002.00 €-
Gold2402.40 €+0.40 €
Platinum3003.00 €+1.00 €
Titanium4004.00 €+2.00 €

Even on the highest tier the expense stays at two percent of turnover - and it only ever reaches customers who already have twelve orders and 5,000 points behind them.

Climbing and dropping

Rolling window or lifetime score

Two modes are available, and they lead to completely different programmes.

The difference in one sentence:

  • Rolling (default) - the points of the last 365 days count. Points drop out of the window at the far end, so a customer can climb and fall.
  • Lifetime - everything ever collected counts, including expired and redeemed points. Whoever reaches Gold stays Gold.

Rolling rewards current loyalty and keeps a tier meaningful. Lifetime is more generous and easier to explain, but it devalues the upper tiers over the years.

The grace period prevents the insulting drop

If the balance falls below the threshold, there is no immediate downgrade. Out of the box the customer keeps the tier for another 30 days. If the balance recovers within that time, the tier stays as if nothing had happened.

Immediate
downgrade on the same day
With grace
tier is kept for the grace period (default, 30 days)
Never
once reached, never lost - downgrade only by hand

A downgrade is the most unpleasant moment of any loyalty programme. The grace period turns it into a warning instead of a punishment.

The loyalty journey in the customer account

The customer account shows the whole ladder with every tier, the customer's own position in it and the distance to the next one - in points and in orders, because both conditions have to be met.

Without that display a tier is just a number in a database. With it, it becomes a goal the customer can follow.

What you set for this

The settings for this use case

The tiers themselves live under Customers → Loyalty points → Loyalty tiers. These settings govern how the tier system works overall.

Loyalty tiers belong to the Enterprise plan. Without it the programme runs completely on points and rewards - tiers are an expansion, not a prerequisite.

Common questions

Common questions on this topic

Do I need loyalty tiers at all?

No. The programme is complete without them: earning, redeeming, rewards, goals and boosters all work on their own. Tiers pay off when a recognisable group of frequent buyers carries a large share of your turnover.

How does a customer climb a tier?

They have to meet both conditions of the tier: the point balance and the minimum number of completed orders. For the shipped Gold that is 500 points and three orders. The evaluation runs automatically every five minutes.

Can a customer drop back down?

That is your decision. In rolling mode with the default grace period they keep the tier for another 30 days after the balance falls below the threshold. With the "Never" setting nobody ever drops.

Does the multiplier affect the price?

No, only the points. A customer on Titanium pays the same prices as everyone else and receives twice as many points for the same order.

Can I create my own tiers?

Yes. Name, threshold, minimum orders, multiplier and colour are free, and the number of tiers is not limited. The four shipped tiers are a suggestion, not a framework.
