Promotions with points: giving more without touching the price
Every discount campaign leaves a mark: customers learn to wait for the next one, and the price they consider correct goes down. A points promotion works just as well and leaves the price untouched.
Why point promotions spare the price
Discounts train, points reward
Someone who has had 20 percent off three times will not buy at full price the fourth time. The discount has become the expected price. A double-points promotion does not move that anchor: the price stays what it was, and the benefit lies in the future.
On top of that a points promotion only takes effect on the next purchase - it sells today and binds for tomorrow. A discount sells today and costs today.
What doubling really costs
With the default values one point equals one percent of discount. A double-points promotion therefore costs one further percent - and only if the customer really redeems the points later.
Promotion
What the customer gets
What it costs you
20 % discount
20 % immediately
20 % of turnover, immediately
Double points
2 % on the next purchase
at most 1 % extra, later
Five times points
5 % on the next purchase
at most 4 % extra, later
That is why loud-sounding promotions such as "five times the points" remain affordable long after a discount of the same size would have eaten the margin.
Exactly where it pays off
A booster does not have to apply to everything. It can be bound to a selection of products, to a period or to a rule from the Shopware rule builder - a customer group, a country or a minimum order value.
Typical shapes:
Double points on a category that needs to sell down
Triple points over a long weekend
A fixed bonus of 500 points above a given order value
More points for a customer group you want to win back
How several boosters interact
Two kinds that stay out of each other's way
A booster acts either as a multiplier (the points are multiplied) or as a fixed bonus (a fixed number is added). The two kinds are handled separately and have their own rules for the case where several apply at once.
Multipliers
default: the highest one wins
Fixed bonuses
default: they add up
Other choices
lowest wins, or all multipliers multiply together
The defaults are deliberately cautious: a second multiplier does not double again, while a second fixed bonus simply adds.
Boosters and loyalty tier together
The tier multiplier and a booster multiplier are two different things. How they relate is written into the calculation of every single booking - step by step and readable.
In the administration a click on a booking opens the full calculation: base amount, tier at booking time, effective boosters, rounding and result. That makes every figure explainable to a customer.
A promotion nobody sees does nothing
When a booster that applies to the whole order is running, a notice banner appears in the shop - in the cart and, if you want, on the product page too. The text comes from the booster itself.
On the loyalty page in the customer account running promotions additionally appear under "Current promotions". Whoever announces a promotion should make it visible there as well.
What you set for this
The settings for this use case
Boosters themselves are created under Customers → Loyalty points → Boosters. The configuration only holds the two combination rules.
What is the difference between a booster and a discount?
A discount lowers the price immediately and costs immediately. A booster raises the points for the same order and only costs once the customer redeems the extra points - on their next purchase.
Can several boosters apply at the same time?
Yes. Multipliers and fixed bonuses are handled separately: among multipliers the highest wins out of the box, fixed bonuses add up. Both rules can be changed.
Can I limit a booster to a category?
Yes. A booster can apply to all products, a selection or a period, and can additionally be bound to a rule from the Shopware rule builder.
Does the customer see that a promotion is running?
Yes. Order-wide boosters produce a notice banner in the cart, optionally on the product page too, and appear in the customer account under "Current promotions".
How do I check that a booster calculated correctly?
Through the booking: in the administration every booking shows the full calculation with base amount, loyalty tier, effective boosters and rounding.
