A balance you cannot spend is a number without a purpose. This chapter describes both routes - cash discount and reward - and the four limits with which you steer how much a single order may cost.
The settings sit in the Redeeming points section of the configuration; the rewards themselves under Customers → Loyalty points → Rewards.
Cash discount
What a point is worth
The conversion says how many points make one euro of discount - 100 out of the box. Together with an earn rate of one point per euro that equals one percent off.
100
points per 1 € discount
100
minimum points per redemption
1
step size
0
maximum = no limit
Earn rate and conversion belong together. Changing one should mean looking at the other - otherwise what the programme costs shifts unnoticed.
Four limits and what they prevent
Each of the four settings in the redemption section solves a problem of its own. Together they define what a cart paid with points may look like.
Setting
Default
Prevents
Points per 1.00 discount
100
a point value nobody can judge
Minimum points per redemption
100
redemptions worth a few cents
Redemption step size
1
nothing - the default allows the exact balance
Maximum points per order
0 (no limit)
a single cart that becomes almost free
The step size is the least conspicuous of the four. Set to 100 it allows redemption in whole euros only - tidier, but it always leaves a remainder behind.
The slider in the cart
Redemption happens on the cart page. The customer sets how many of their points to use and immediately sees the resulting discount. The redemption appears as its own line in the cart.
The box can sit in three places: above the products, below the products, or on the right below the summary - the last being the default.
Rewards
A reward is a product, not an amount
A reward ties a point price to an article from your catalogue. When it is redeemed, that article lands as a line item in the cart - with everything that belongs to it: stock, shipping weight, tax rate.
Point price
how many points the reward costs
Product
which article goes into the cart
Minimum order value
from which cart value it can be redeemed
Priority
the order in which rewards appear
How many rewards are possible depends on the plan: one in Free, three in Starter, ten in Business, unlimited in Enterprise.
Three states in the customer account
Rewards sit in the customer account under "Redeemable rewards", even when they are out of reach. Each one says what is missing.
State
Meaning
Redeemable now
points suffice, conditions met
Minimum order value
points suffice, the cart is still too small
More points needed
with the exact number of points missing
In the cart a fourth case joins them: if the linked product is not available, it reads "Not available".
Discount and reward in one order
Out of the box a customer may redeem both at once. A check in the background makes sure that discount points plus reward points never exceed the balance - not even when the cart changes in between.
If you do not want that, switch combined redemption off. The customer then picks one of the two routes.
When something interrupts
Abandoned orders give the points back
Redeemed points are only gone for good once the order comes about. If a customer abandons checkout or the order is cancelled, the stake returns as a counter-booking.
That too sits in the point ledger. A redemption and its reversal are two bookings, not one deleted line.
Which points are spent first
Redemption always draws from the oldest valid lot. That is the customer-friendly order: as little as possible expires when a validity period is set.
The booking shows which lots covered a redemption - under "Covered from".
You decide. Out of the box 100 points make one euro of discount; together with one point per euro of turnover that is one percent.
Can I cap the discount per order?
Yes, through the maximum points per order. The default is 0 and means no limit.
What is the redemption step size?
It defines the blocks in which redemption is allowed. With the default of 1 a customer can spend their balance exactly; set to 100 it only works in whole euros.
What happens if an order with a redemption is cancelled?
The points used return as a counter-booking. Redemption and reversal both sit in the point ledger.
Which points are redeemed first?
Always the oldest valid lot. That way as little as possible expires when a validity period is set.
Can customers combine discount and reward?
Out of the box, yes. A check makes sure both together fit the balance. A setting switches the combination off.
