Setting up

After the installation the programme is already running - with values that suit most shops. This chapter goes through what you should still look at once, and in which order.

Everything sits under Customers → Loyalty points. The configuration additionally lives under Extensions → My extensions → Loyalty Points & Rewards → Configuration.

The beginning

Install and activate

Installation works like any other extension: install, activate, clear the cache. On the first start the plugin creates four loyalty tiers, seven flows and four email templates - all of which you can change or switch off afterwards.

Shipped tiers
Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium
Flows
registration, newsletter, points credited, birthday, tier reached, expiry reminder, goal reached
Email templates
points credited, loyalty tier, goal reached, expiry
Active at once
earning points, the dashboard, the loyalty page in the customer account

This creation happens on installation only, not on every update. If you delete a shipped tier, the next update will not bring it back.

The setup assistant

Under Customers → Loyalty points → Setup assistant sits a guided pass through everything that has to be decided at the start. It changes the same settings as the configuration, but in an order that builds on itself.

StepWhat it covers
1. Points namewhat your currency is called in the storefront
2. Look in the shopwhere points are visible and in which theme
3. Earn & redeemearn rate, conversion, limits
4. Release & cancellationwhen points become valid and what a cancellation does
5. Free pointsregistration, newsletter, birthday
6. Point expiryvalidity and the reminder email
7. Rewardsproducts that can be exchanged for points
8. Boosters & goalspromotions and milestones
9. Loyalty tiersthe tier ladder and its multipliers

The assistant has a second entry point: Reward existing customers. It also sits as a card on the dashboard and is the first thing to deal with after setting up.

The name of the points is not a setting

What your currency is called in the shop - loyalty points, reward points, stars, coins - is a snippet, not a configuration option. You change it through the language file, not through an input field in the configuration.

The first step of the setup assistant leads to the right place. The term then appears on the product page, in the cart and in the customer account. Email templates do not follow automatically - you rewrite those yourself.

The order that has proven itself

Do the maths first, make it visible second

Earn rate and conversion decide what the programme costs. Both should be settled before the first customer sees a balance - lowering them later is unpleasant to explain.

In this order:

  • Set the earn rate and conversion - one percent out of the box
  • Check the waiting period - it protects against points from cancelled orders
  • Create rewards - without a goal a balance does nothing
  • Take over existing customers - once, before the first email goes out
  • Switch on visibility - product page, cart, customer account
  • Check which customer groups should stay out - dealers with their own terms, say

Only then is an announcement to customers worth it. A programme advertised before it has rewards disappoints on first sight.

What already runs without a purchase

In the free scope the shop collects completely: points arise with every order, the dashboard calculates, the loyalty page in the customer account is there. What is missing is the release - points stay pending and never become redeemable.

That lets you try out and observe the whole programme without a single point costing money. If you move to a paid plan later, the "Release points now" action on the dashboard catches up the accumulated backlog - nobody loses what they collected in the meantime.

A page that explains the programme

From the customer account a link leads to a landing page that explains the programme in your own words. Which one is picked in the setting Loyalty programme page; its SEO URL is resolved automatically per sales channel and language.

The link reads "How the programme works". Leave the setting empty and the link is hidden - though the explanation is then missing exactly where customers look for it.

Common questions

Common questions on this topic

Do I have to configure anything after installing?

No, the programme runs with the defaults straight away. A pass through the setup assistant is still worthwhile - above all earn rate, conversion and at least one reward.

What does the plugin create on installation?

Four loyalty tiers (Silver, Gold, Platinum, Titanium), seven flows and four email templates. This happens on installation only, not on every update.

How do I change the name of the points?

Through the snippet, not through the configuration. The first step of the setup assistant leads to the right place. Email templates do not follow automatically.

What can I try out without buying?

Everything except the release: points are collected, the dashboard calculates, the loyalty page is there. The points stay pending, though, and are not redeemable.

In which order should I proceed?

Earn rate and conversion first, then the waiting period, then at least one reward, then take over the existing customers, and switch on visibility in the shop last.
